Good businesses know how important it is to follow the relevant markets that may affect business operations in a variety of ways. Whether you are a small, mid or large business, local, national and global markets will have an impact on your business, and it's important to be prepared and informed to make the decisions that will help your business succeed.
You will find a brief summary of relevant markets here on business.com.au.
Stock Market
The stock market is often used to gauge the national economy, investor attitudes, business viability and activity and a variety of other purposes. You can buy stocks or shares in any listed company, and this will give you a part ownership in that business.
The stock market is also home to many other financial tools that allow you to invest directly into a range of products from commodities like oil and gold to entire market sectors. Businesses themselves use the stock market to raise capital for expansion and other necessary business functions.
In Australia, the primary stock market or stock exchange is the ASX, which stand for Australian Securities Exchange. It is one of the world's leading stock markets (on market capitalisation) and you will find information and recent reports on the Australian stock market from many of the country's leading media outlets as well as from the ASX itself.
Share Market
Often, the term share market is used interchangeably with stock market or stock exchange. They all refer to roughly the same thing, but more than just stock is traded on a stock exchange whereas the share market refer specifically to company shares.
Australia's biggest businesses all issue company shares, and names you would be familiar with are BHP, Rio Tinto and our big four banks. People use the share market for both short, mid and long-term investments, and investing in the share market can have many uses. You can invest in shares online, and most Australian share trading occurs on the ASX.
Forex Market
The forex market has grown in popularity in recent times, and anybody who trades overseas or is interested in currency trading will be interested in forex. Forex is sometime called FX trading, and basically stands for foreign currency exchange.
Unlike other markets, you do not need to conduct forex trading on the ASX. A designated market maker can allow you to compete in forex trading, which can allow you to profit from currency price fluctuations or even lock in a price for trade so that your business is protected from currency fluctuations.
