Frequently Asked Questions
Anyone born in Australia must obtain a copy of their birth certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages. If you were born overseas and do not have or cannot obtain a copy of your birth certificate, your overseas passport will suffice. If you do not have an overseas passport or birth certificate, and cannot obtain one, I can complete a Commonwealth Statutory Declaration for you.
Do you do weddings anywhere?Yes, within reason. I am not as young as I used to be so won't climb down cliffs or go to areas that are hard to access! Also, i am no longer available for weddings on beaches or boats in the harbour. My fees cover travel anywhere in Sydney within 50kms of my home/office in Russell Lea, so that is a pretty wide area. Wedding Package #3 covers travel within 40kms of my home/office only.
How old do we have to be to get married?Australian law requires the person to be 18 years to be married. A court order and permission from your parents is required if you are under the leagal age.
Do we have to pay a fee to be married on a beach or park? Some councils only charge if there are over 50 people at the wedding, whilst others charge for any amount of people. The Royal Botanic Gardens and privately owned gardens do charge a fee. It is advisable to check with the council.
What documents do we need to show you?If you were born in Australia - an original or extract birth certificate. If you were born overseas - a birth certificate or overseas passport. If you do not have a birth certificate from your country of origin and are unable to obtaine one, I can complete a Commonwealth Statutory Declaration for you.
If either of you have been married before - a certificate of divorce, annulment or death certificate.
All documents must be originals or extracts, photocopies and laminted documents are not accepted. Documents in other languages must be officially translated.
Are there any hidden charges in your fees?My fee includes all legal documentation including letters for visa applications, registering the marriage on-line and sending the paperwork to Births, Deaths and Marriages, the official marriage certificate, creating the ceremony, all travel to interviews, rehearsal and venue for the wedding (within 50kms of my office), providing a covered signing table, chair and *red carpet (*depending on wedding package). The only other cost is to BDM for the standard marriage certificate, which is required if you wish to change your name or for visa applications.
How soon can we get marriedThe notice of intended marriage has to be completed, witnessed and lodged with the celebrant one month before you can get married. I can provide the notice for you.
In special circumstances a shortening of time is available from local court houses, but you must fit into their categories. Please contact me for more information.
